Palm Beach Post Reports

Park Vista coach Erica Green has put her girls volleyball team through a tough grind the first part of the season, but the Cobras didn't show any signs of fatigue Tuesday night in a matchup of two of the area's ranked teams.

Park Vista (9-4) swept Palm Beach Gardens 25-19, 25-21, 25-18 behind a strong performance from middle blocker Michelle Klein, who registered 19 blocks and eight kills for the sixth-ranked Cobras.

"We've had a busy schedule," said Green, whose squad lost to state power Tampa Prep in the Cobras' bracket final at the OVC tournament in Orlando last weekend. "They've been working hard, and we've been playing really good competition."

Green, who is in her first year guiding the Park Vista program, said it's been a learning process for her and the players, but she likes what she's seeing develop.

"It took some time for me to get to know the girls, and they're getting to know my style of coaching," Green said. "I think we're starting to jell."

That was evident against No. 7 Gardens (4-2), which was short-handed for the first game of the match because Gators coach Cheryl Green benched three starters for disciplinary reasons. After dropping the first game, Gardens appeared poised to possibly even the match in the second game before Nashali Vazquez reeled off six consecutive service points for Park Vista to break a 15-all tie. Park Vista jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the third game en route to the sweep.

Kaylee Bebee had 15 digs and eight kills and Jordan Sullivan added 20 assists for Park Vista.

Anne Corrigan led Gardens with 11 kills and four blocks. Kelsey Parry contributed 10 kills and Brigitte Zavithsanos nine assists for the Gators.

Dear Coaches,
I feel you should know the following definitions for volleyball that you keeping stats and calling into the paper. The kids or parents should not be asked to keep stats when they are not properly trained. It is unfair to the other players whose coaches keep correct stats.
Nineteen blocks is completely unheard of in a college game so I find it very hard to believe it could happen in a three game high school match. You are stating one player terminated play by blocking 19 attacks and then also had 8 kills so that same player was responsible for 27 points. These block figures seem very inflated. Maybe she touched 19 balls but I don’t think she terminated play 19 times in one match.

A Block is awarded to a player whenever that player blocks the ball into the opposition's court leading directly to a point or side out.

An Assist whenever that player passes or sets the ball to a teammate who attacks the ball for a Kill.

An Ace is a serve that results directly to a point. Hits opponents floor untouched or opponent passes 1st ball but it can't be kept in play.

A Kill is awarded to a player any time an attack is unreturnable by the opposition or any
time the attack leads directly to a blocking error by the opposition. A Kill leads directly to
either a point or a side-out.

A Dig is awarded to a player whenever a player passes the ball which has been attacked
by the opposition. Digs are only given when players receive an attacked ball and it is kept in
play.

Sincerely,
Volleyball Fan

nobody cares it's football season

@ the football fan, If you don't care why are you looking at the volleyball round up?
Re: The Gardens vs Park Vista game, Don't try to blame a loss on girls setting out because of disciplined them, YOU LOST because your girls couldn't pass up a ball correctly, and you were out played. And I heard the girls where being punished because they want to go to Homecoming instead of a rinky dink tournament.

the stats reported by the papers are rarely accurate. 19 blocks? no way, half the teams count a touch as a block. ive seen crazy stats and even benefitted from a few myself, but these really nothing that can be done about it. you always have to take this reporting with a grain of salt.

the real problem i have is when schools stupid kids run the score book. my team was called out of rotation one year when we were down 12-13 in the 5th game because some underclassman kid (from the other school of course) wasn't paying attention and screwed up the book. id much rather have fools running the stats than the books

at volleyball fan, you are correct; I remember one year when a coach down south was calling serve received balls "digs"

Volleyball Mom commented on September 23, 2011 at 9:26 a.m.: report abuse

I really like "Volleyball Fan's" comments about stats. He is right. One stat error that you didn't mention is when an overpass is blocked down for a point. I was taught that is really a kill, not a block. A block can only result from an attack, not a pass or a dig.

And it was my daughter that was reported with 19 blocks and we (including her) know that they were not all real blocks, but some were likely blocks that were dug back up by the opposing team and some may also have been touches or block errors. However, my guess would be that about half probably were real blocks. We would also prefer that all high school teams report accurate stats but that doesn't seem to be the case. So like "vball player" stated we need to "take this reporting with a grain of salt."

The problem with taking these reports with a grain of salt is that players are looked at the end of the year for all county honors and are awarded honors they don't really deserve. Beside it makes the coaches that are reporting them as if they don’t understand the game or how to keep stats. We really should try to fix this issue so the proper players are awarded the proper recognition.
