Katelyn Mears jump-started Lake Worth Christian with a run of seven service points to help the fourth-ranked Defenders sweep No. 10 Benjamin 25-10, 25-16, 25-18 on Tuesday.
So complete was the Defenders' control of the match that they never trailed and were tied only once, at 1-1 in the third game. Senior Becki Meerbeek contributed 10 kills and three blocks for the Defender; junior Danielle Lampman added 13 assists and freshman Kristin Kintz had nine digs.
Sophomore Christine Casey led the Buccaneers with seven kills.
"I thought it would be a lot closer," Defenders coach Terri Kaiser said. "They (Benjamin) always have a great program."
Mears finished with a team-high 12 service points and her first seven helped the Defenders (21-3) put the Buccaneers (14-6) on their heels.
"I was serving in-between and short and it confused them," Mears said.
Benjamin coach Gary Slade was impressed.
"That was a very good team making another team look very average and making us beat ourselves," Slade said. "They've got a lot of firepower and we couldn't match up against it."
Kaiser said her team was hot coming two tough matches last weekend at a tournament in St. Petersburg.
"All the matches were best-of-five and they've been working really hard, so they're ready to go," Kaiser said.
She said the Defenders face what might be their toughest match of the season Friday when they play host to Miami-Florida Christian.
Benjamin travels to Orlando this weekend to play in a tournament.
