Thursday's boys basketball roundup

Thursday, February 16, 2012
by Steve Dorsey

Chris Hall kept his vow.

"I said I didn't want to leave high school without beating Dwyer," Hall said after leading John I. Leonard to a 67-58 win Thursday against defending state champion Dwyer in a Class 8A regional quarterfinal. "I've been waiting for this game since I got to high school."

Hall scored a game-high 22 points and sophomore forward Aaron Horne chipped in with 20 points to lift Leonard (18-6) to a regional playoff victory for the first time in nine years. Senior guard Trae Dixon contributed 11 points for the Lancers, who will host Spanish River on Tuesday in the regional semifinals.

Dwyer rallied from a 17-point third-quarter deficit and trimmed Leonard's lead to two points with 6:05 remaining, but Dwyer (18-8) never gained the lead.

Horne sealed the victory with back-to-back layups with less than a minute left to extend the Lancers' lead to 65-58, and when the final second ticked off the clock, Leonard fans stormed the court.

Dwyer center Joel James was held scoreless in the first half by Leonard's swarming zone defense. James muscled his way inside for 17 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough.

"Hopefully, we can carry this momentum into the next round," Leonard coach Jim Howell said.

Steve,

Great summary of the games, however, you need made a error and should post a correction so fans don't go to the wrong gym. Atlantic will travel to host Palm Beach Lakes, not play host to Palm Beach Lakes.

Game between St. Andrews and BIshop Verot should be a good one. This Bishop Verot team is fairly good, they even had the first victory in the history of "City of Palms" tournament. They are usually the host and had not one a game there in like 29 years.

St. Andrews better get there the day before and sleep over night, would not want to walk off the bus on this team.

Fanboy this is playoff basketball, its not going to be easy, Lakes are 17-6 and has beat each team in the playoff by double digit points during the season, LW played a good game but PBL is far from overated!

If the refs call the game the same way on both ends of the court, st andrews will kill bishop verot, i mean 30-12 on fouls, that was horrible. Good luck st andrews!!!

Duffy's at PGA and A1A in Palm Beach Gardens will show it. Best place to watch. Palm Beach Ale House on Palm beach Lakes Blvd will show it. Duffy's off Village north of PB Lakes Blvd. If they aren't showing just ask your watier and he will more than likely put in on for you.
