Drew Engel knew where he wanted to be. He just needed to find a way to get there.

The Dwyer senior figured it out this season, recording a perfect 11-0 regular-season record and winning the Class 4A individual singles title.

“I expected it,” Engel said. “I was really close to where I wanted to be and I just finally started to improve.”

The growth was on display in a match against Miami-Ferguson’s Jose Ortega with the individual singles title on the line. Engel rallied from three match points to earn the 11-9 win in the third set’s 10-point tiebreaker.

“It was a big moment,” Engel said of the comeback.

As a junior, Engel qualified for the state tournament as an individual, but he was eliminated in the quarterfinal round.

Since arriving at Dwyer as a sophomore, Panthers coach Jose Colon said Engel’s physical growth and maturity has been the biggest reasons for his success.

“Drew has a lot of power and he’s smart,” Colon said. “He was perfect last year. At some point, I think he’s going to be a professional tennis player.”

Before that, Engel hopes to play at the college level.

“I’m an all-around player,” Engel said. “I’ve been stepping it up and focusing a lot more since my junior year.”
