JACKSONVILLE -- The boys track and field state title once again rests in Broward, but Palm Beach County has plenty to be proud of.
While Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas won its fifth straight boys team championship at Saturday's Class 4A state meet at the University of North Florida, Park Vista (fifth, 38 points), Dwyer (ninth) and Royal Palm Beach (10th) each finished in the top 10. Santaluces was the top girls team, finishing in a tie for sixth place (28).
Palm Beach County competitors won a total of 29 individual or relay medals - including two golds, five silvers and four bronzes.
"We just had to represent for Palm Beach County," Royal Palm Beach senior Tremane McCullough said.
McCullough won gold in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, 3.25 inches, besting Dwyer senior Jethro St. Hubert, who was second (23-1.5). In the triple jump, McCullough was fifth, with a 45-9.75 mark. St. Hubert was seventh (44-11).
"He was my biggest opponent, from Palm Beach all the way up here," McCullough said. "And he's a good friend of mine."
Dwyer senior Moriel Pitt and Park Vista junior Christopher Grinley tangled in the hurdles. Pitt won silver (13.94 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles, one one-hundredth of a second from gold. Grinley was fourth. In the 300 hurdles, Grinley took bronze (37.33), Pitt was fifth.
"I've been telling everyone," Pitt said of Grinley. "He's gonna kill it next year."
Grinley was part of the Cobras' school-record 1,600-meter relay, which was third in 3:16.33. Atlantic (fourth, 3:16.71) and Royal Palm (fifth, 3:18.01) were right behind.
Park Vista junior Yephnick Adelphonse won gold in the high jump, clearing 6-5 in a two-man tiebreaker.
"We got a lot of medals. Everyone's going home with something," Park Vista coach Jeff Fossen said of his team. "They left it all on the track."
That goes for senior Edens Thermidor, who, before running in the 1,600 relay, won silver in the 400 meters (47.82). Earlier in the day, he ran anchor leg on the Cobras' sixth-place 3,200-meter relay.
"I have enough left to go in my car and go home," he joked.
Palm Beach Central senior Travis Morrison, treated for dehydration after the 400 prelims, returned to finish seventh. "I wanted my medal," he said.
"He got his medal," Thermidor said. "I'm proud of him."
John I. Leonard senior Anderson Charles finished his stellar career with a silver medal-winning 4:17.65 in the 1,600 meters and a bronze-winning 1:52.93 in the 800.
"I was kind of winded from the mile," he said after the 800. "I just wanted to hold on."
Santaluces senior Miriam Pierre dominated the shot put, throwing a gold-winning 43-6.5, nearly 5 feet more than the runner-up. Seminole Ridge junior Alexandra Jackson finished fourth.
Pierre's classmate, Clariwin Dameus, had a huge day. After placing 10th in the long jump, she won silver in both the 100 and 300 hurdles and was anchor leg on the Chiefs' seventh-place 1,600 relay squad.
"I didn't do well in my best event," Dameus said. "That got me mad."
Park Vista senior Alexa Wood finished third (37-6) in the triple jump and seventh (18-1) in the long jump. Seminole Ridge sophomore Danielle Livingstone had a strong state debut, placing eighth (17-9) in the long jump and eighth (15.43) in the 100 hurdles.
In their first state meets, Royal Palm Beach freshman Erin Ford finished fourth (55.89) in the 400 and Jupiter freshman Courteney Zboyan was seventh (11:35.71) in the 3,200.
