Pahokee football team now forced to forfeit two district games after coach notices second violation

The Pahokee football team, already forced to forfeit a district game because of an academically ineligible player, now likely will have to forfeit a second district game for using the same player, the Florida High School Athletic Association said Tuesday.

Pahokee initially was forced to forfeit its Sept. 25 win against Cardinal Newman, a decision first reported by the Palm Beach Post on Monday and announced early Tuesday afternoon by the FHSAA. But an association official said the school reported a second violation involving the same ineligible athlete and called it in to the FHSAA late Tuesday afternoon.

FHSAA Associate Executive Director Denarvise Thornton said Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson noticed the violation on film.

"He went through all of his tapes and found that the kid played in a second game," said Thornton, who did not disclose the opponent in Pahokee's second forfeit. Thompson has not responded to requests for comment this week.

The second district loss would put Pahokee in a more perilous position to make the playoffs.

The losses will drop Pahokee to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in District 7-2B. The Blue Devils can still clinch at least a spot in a potential three-way tiebreaker by beating Fort Lauderdale-University on Friday, but a loss would eliminate them from post-season contention. Pahokee has beaten University handily in recent games.

If the second forfeit turns out to be Pahokee's 31-20 win over Coconut Creek-North Broward Prep on Oct. 2 (one week after the Cardinal Newman game), the Blue Devils would not be able to win the district title even with a win Friday and a North Broward Prep loss.

Pahokee has won three straight district and state championships.

Prior to the forfeits, the Blue Devils were assured of no less than a spot in a potential three-way tie-breaker event and could have won the district outright this week.

Pahokee Athletic Director Tom Mejia said Monday the player, a junior, is no longer on the team and did not participate in any other games. In a letter to the FHSAA and Cardinal Newman Principal John Clarke, Pahokee Principal Ariel Alejo stated that the player only practiced the week leading up to the Cardinal Newman game and played in it, but did not participate in any form after Sept. 25.

The FHSAA's letter to the school Tuesday, however, indicated that the player participated in three games. Thornton said that that was a misprint and only one violation was known at the time the letter was composed.

Mejia declined comment later Tuesday when informed there would be a second forfeit.

Alejo has not responded to requests for comment this week. A Palm Beach County School District spokesperson said the district does not have a statement at this time.

The minimum penalty for using an academically ineligible athlete is $2,500 per player per contest, but the FHSAA lessened Pahokee's fine to $100 because the school self-reported the incident. Thornton said the second violation is considered self-reported as well.

The FHSAA also placed the school on administrative probation until Sept. 25, 2010. Executive Director Roger Dearing wrote in his letter to the school that this is the least severe form of probation he can enact.

"It's as fair as it can be," Mejia said of the first FHSAA ruling. "It was an honest mistake."

The athlete in question appeared to have a 2.1 grade point average prior to the Newman game, but school administrators later discovered the student benefited from an incorrect grade change in one course and should have had a 1.8 average, Mejia said Monday. Student-athletes must maintain at least a 2.0 average to be eligible.

Pahokee can appeal the decision to the FHSAA's Sectional Appeals Committee.

First we get kicked out of the Nike 7 on 7 for two consecutive years, then we have Asst Coaches who are routinely arressted for crimes such as drugs, battery, who continues to interact with the team, and now we must forfeit games because a player was allowed to play who was not eligible. Add that to the joke of a principal at the school. WOW!! LETS BORROW A PAGE FROM THE BOCA PARENTS. IT'S TIME FOR THE COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER AND DEMAND THE DISTRICT CLEAN HOUSE!!!!

Pahokee coaches should take notes from Mark James of Boyd Anderson, who knows how to have his players not attend school at all, play in games and not get in trouble at all. He even grags about FHSAA has nothing on him. Also, he can help them gets get grades from outside sources not within the school district and need teachers at the school to change the grades. Check out one of his star senior DBs that is ranked 4 star by Rivals and all others and headed to a Florida school.

The state is wrong for these forfeits. Why should these young men suffer for their adminstration and coaches mistake. If anything the coaches should be put on probation and the adminstration should be penalized. The seniors will never get their last year of high school football back. The coaches still get paid and the hard working young men have to be penalized. This is bullshit those kids earned those victories. Way to go FHSAA you really dropped the ball on this one.

It's right to take back games but if schools like Inlet who kind of did not fight for the title should get the game it should be thrown out. If thats possible. I totaly disagree but rules are rules are guess.

I could care less about the forfeit, they deserve what the stae is throwing at them what goes around comes around, thats all i can say about Pahokee... if we at PBL have to abide by the rule..so should everyone else...fair is fair thats how i see it...The referee cheated for them last Friday so thats why there is a possibility that they might not make the state title this year....hahahahaha

Well i agree with FHSAA they not doing anything wrong. First thing first you cant just say penalize the staff because the student also knew that he wasnt qualified to play football.. When he could have just sat out a couple games until he got his grades right. He have a whole nother year to play football but dun have messed it up for those who are graduating this year. Poor on that student.

Damn, Lakes is seriuosly sweating that game vs Pahokee. I understand yall mad but that's in past let it go. I think messed up how all this is happning to Pahokee, but hey s*** just happens and rules are rules. I'm not really worried cause their still going to win thier district by beating University this friday or by winning a three way tie breaker in their district. This friday my school RPB clinches their district.
( Broward County, whyn are you talking about your own school like that, weather its true or not keep that on low

Well I am die hard Blue Devil til the day I die, but I feel that whats meant for you is meant for you, maybe taking these games away fromus will make our boys play harder and more determined to win a state title this year even though they havent been playing like previous seasons but I can agree with what some are saying if the kid was qualified to play it should have never happen, BUT I will also say that it seems that the Pahokee Blue Devils have a dark cloud over them and their is always someone or something that trys to bring them down, but like said before whats meant for you is meant for you and in the end no one can change that but GOD.
