The area girls weight lifting landscape will largely remain the same this season, with seven out of the 10 Palm Beach Post All-Area first-team lifters last year returning. The biggest name, however, will need to be replaced.
Cayla Amatulli, one of the best lifters the county has seen, graduated from Seminole Ridge. Looking to take her place is former teammate Jennifer Gianantonio, who finished sixth at state in the 129-pound weight class last year. She has come up with a strategy which she believes will help her do even better as a senior at state.
"I'll have more of an advantage if I drop a weight class and go against girls who are smaller," said Gianantonio, who plans to compete at 119 pounds at state. "I've done a lot of research. I've printed out all the girls' names from both weight classes at state and pretty much have everything mapped out."
Seminole Ridge, which finished 12th at state last year, will have up to 60 girls competing to fill the 20 available spots on this year's team.
"For me, that's the most we've ever had here," coach Ben Kenerson said. "There's twenty spots up for grab, and if you want to have one, you've got to work. You're not always going to come in to Seminole Ridge High School and actually lift for points."
Other Hawks contributors this season include juniors Eileen Perez and Cheyanne Sehensa. Perez finished 16th at state last year with a combined lift of 220 pounds in the 110-pound weight class and Sehensa was 23rd with a combined 255 pounds at 129 pounds.
Other top area lifters include Boca Raton's Brittany Fruge and Boynton Beach's Nicole Eaton. Fruge, who will compete at 199 pounds, was 12th at state last year. Eaton, who will compete at 101 pounds, was 28th at state last year.
