ORLANDO — Everything seemed amiss.

Glades Central lost 27-13 to Cocoa in the Class 2A championship Saturday night at the Florida Citrus Bowl and looked nothing like the team that ripped through its first 13 games undefeated.

Tears trickled down the players' faces and many quickly removed their silver medals in disappointment.

"It hurts bad," said senior wide receiver Greg Dent, who had five catches for 105 yards in the loss. "We had the team to win the state this year, but we made mistakes tonight."

The defense, which had five shutouts this season, crumbled against Cocoa's powerful rushing attack, yielding a staggering 316 rushing yards.

Cocoa running back Chevelle Buie ran for 208 yards on 27 carries and scored on runs of 62 and 37 yards.

"We didn't play assignment football," Raiders defensive end Isiah Corbett said. "Once (Cocoa) got in their set, they shifted to an overload and we didn't have time to switch everybody around.

"I felt like we had the best defense in the state of Florida and it hurts so bad to go out like this."

Cocoa's defensive ends, Tyrell Denson and Ra'Shawde Myers, flattened Glades Central's offensive line and suffocated quarterback L.J. Thomas.

Thomas was sacked six times and was hurried into six incomplete passes. Altogether, he connected on 20 of 39 throws for 294 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Thomas also lost a fumble as Glades Central committed three turnovers.

"He was harassed all night," Raiders coach Jessie Hester said. "Bad offensive line play finally caught up with us. Those kids didn't give him any time to find receivers downfield."

Glades Central advanced to the Cocoa 35-yard line or beyond three times in the final 27:42, but went scoreless on each of those possessions.

Cocoa overcame a 13-3 deficit early in the second quarter and scored the game's final 24 points. The Tigers, who won the Class 3A title last year, finished the season 14-0.

"Glades Central — everybody knows that tradition," Cocoa coach John Wilkinson said. "For little old Cocoa to beat Glades Central is quite an accomplishment."

The Raiders scored on their opening possession when running back Antwon Chisholm capped a quick drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

Glades Central took a 13-3 lead when Chisholm caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Thomas with 9:17 left in the second quarter, but that was the last time the Raiders reached the end zone.

Cocoa jumped ahead with two touchdowns during a 10-second span in the second quarter. After Buie ran up the middle for his 62-yard score, Thomas threw an interception to Antonio Wallace, who returned it 28 yards for a touchdown.

"It was totally shocking," Hester said. "But you have to play your best in big games and we didn't."

The Raiders' loss was the final chapter in the high school careers of several spectacular seniors.

  • Dent caught 54 passes for 1,387 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also had two interceptions and scored twice on special teams this season.
  • Thomas finished with a 23-1 record as Glades Central's starting quarterback.
  • He threw for 5,669 yards and 63 touchdowns during his junior and senior seasons.

    • Safety Travis Bell, one of the area's elite defensive backs, finished his senior year with a team-high 10 interceptions.
    • Despite coming up short in their bid for the school's seventh state title, Hester said his players exceeded his expectations.

"They played way above their means this year, no question about it," he said. "I'm really proud of this bunch."

Glades Central has won 24 of its past 26 games and knocked off some of Palm Beach County's best teams this season, including Dwyer, Pahokee, American Heritage and Boca Raton.

coach hester changed the entire offense the double slants and decoys to free greg dent and other receivers was not used.Greg Dent is a damn good receiver. Jump balls completion wins game jette go back and review game tapes of this season. Cocoa defense end was slicing all night a reverse, or halfback flair would have made him have respect for three steps. you got out coach and out played by basic ground an pound by Bouie. sometimes you have to go to the 4-3 defense with line mens in the gaps. Cook tell the quaterback to keep his elbow up parallel to his arm pit for better release velocity. bumm stigged book em danno what Ronald Cook????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I must say Good Job COCOA! Them early field goals and that interception put y'all in there. One thing I can say, that was a good game. Only thing I didnt like was the fact that we still didnt have a kicker, dis far in the year and also, they let one kid, #4 of Cocoa win the game. Cocoa prolly aint throw the ball three times, They simply handed the ball to #4 on every play and he did his thing! Good job on both teams!

Let me explain(WHERE) we are that little City that sticks together through thick and thin. Where STATE CHAMPIONS are born, and the colors ORANGE and BLACK are worn. (WHAT) Should have never been asked but to answer your question. What..... has heart, discipline, sportsmenship,,hearts of gold, colors of ORANGE and BLACK,and GOD on their sides Cocoa and those TIGERS. So I hope I answered your questions. So let me introduce to you without further a due to GC... The defending champions your 2008'-2009 DESERVING STATE CHAMPS........ Cocoa High Tigers ...let's get Tigers

Cocoa played better, point blank. All the trash talk from Cocoa don't phase me...it's the ignorant comment right above me, that gets on my nerves. PkConcernedCitizen, why are you making this a Pahokee/Glades Central thing? And two, Why is it that you say Pickett and Dunkley made the best decision...When we didn't even get to the championship and went 6-5? And three, Dunkley and Pickett were not part of the 3 Championships Dynasty, so what's your point? It's so sad that Some Pahokee Fans wished that GC would lose...when in fact, the Pahokee PLAYERS congradulated the GC players during the playoffs and supported them. Why Can't We? We are too close together not to support one another. I'm sorry, but your comment is just dumb and ignorant! What i admire most about Glades Central, is the discipline, composure and life skills that Coach Hester instilled in them. That's way more important than winning. Anyways, Cocoa...Enjoy this win because if a rematch happens...The outcome will be totally different. John Brantley (Ocala Trinity) threw all over us in 05 in our championship loss. Pahokee the following year shut him down and won the game. So if GC get a rematch next year, then I'm sure revenge will be on their minds...with their Prime target being your very Talented Athelete, Chevelle Buie!!!! Keep your head up Raiders...You're a great team. What don't kills you makes you stronger. MUCK CITY BABY!

Lady Blue Devil I cant agree with you more. I was at that game Sarurday night cheering for Glades like they were Pahokee! I understand during Muck Bowl week things get very intense, but after I want both teams to go all the way.We have strong ties between our two schools. Keep your heads up Raiders! Remember not only do you have BG's support but you got PK's also. Except for that one week in early november.

To Raider for Life, I gave you props where props were due and called it how many of us saw it. Glades fans thought there was no way they would lose to Cocoa, when in reality, Cocoa had the Superior coaching and game plan all along. I guess Belle Glade forgot about the BEATDOWN we gave them the last time we met in the playoffs...remember??? 2003 2nd round we sent you drying your eyes with a 45-35 whipping, so you shouldnt have come up here with your over-confident attitudes!! Six foot recievers out jumping inferior teams may work in the Muck Bowl, but until your coaches can balance out the offense, expect well coached teams such as Cocoa to figure you out.

Raider for life commented on December 14, 2009 at 2:49 p.m.: report abuse

To Raider for Life, I was only trying to express that it would have been nice if the "thuggish" glades fans would have shown the same dignity and respect for the game that players on their team did on the field. Of course I met some regular Glades fans as well, who where as nice as anyone else, so I extend an apology for my blanket statement.

Raider for LIFE! commented on December 14, 2009 at 5 p.m.: report abuse

To Mike in Cocoa.......It doesn't seem as if you "thoroughly" read my post. Again congratulations goes out to Cocoa. My problem with your post was about the "THUGS" comment categorizing "all" Raider fans. That part of your comment was again "IGNORANT AND DISCRIMINATING". I am not questioning Cocoa's talent so, please do not turn my words into something they are not. Please be more specific because I am certain that "each and every RAIDER fan that night" did not act, in your words, THUGGISH. Some may have displayed negative behavior (fans from Cocoa could have acted in the same manner as well). In fact many RAIDER fans showed great DIGNITY AND RESPECT! Enjoy your win and again, if it is meant to be we will see you next year.

PK Pride commented on December 14, 2009 at 6:07 p.m.: report abuse

EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES... Glades Central was up 13-3 and Raiderette Nation was in the stands planning for a parade thinking that the game was over well before halftime. But as we all saw, that joy ended up being sadness in the end as Cocoa scored 24 unanswered points. Did anyone get the license plate # of that Chevy on the field--b.k.a. Chevelle Buie? LOL Will the Pastor and/or Booster @ "The United Baptist Holiness Missionary AME Penticostal Deliverance Church of the Raider Nation" draw up a petition to get rid of Coach "Jet" Hester as they did for Coach Snead? I'm just saying... And for what those young ladies on Glades Central's Band Drill/Dance Team were apparently "ALLOWED" to wear during the halftime performance was just DISGRACEFUL, period!

smokestack lightning commented on December 14, 2009 at 11:01 p.m.: report abuse

i work in south bay, i live in west palm and i placed my bet with cocoa and im glad they won, this will teach all the people in the glades that kept calling me a raider hater, theres a difference between being a hater and being a damm fool, i knew that the raiders pathetic kicking game would cacth up with them and there pathetic offensive line would to,i had nothing against gc but because they look good on paper they sometimes forget that they still have to play the game i watched cocoa play earlier before this game and i knew that they would bring pressure all night on defense just like dwyer did and they let one man beat them on offense. glades had all the stars on there team but cocoa had all the football players on there team. how do you get in the red zone as many times as gc did and dont score, defense thats why, so go ahead fans and blame the coach like you always do and try to run him out of town instead of just admitting that gc got drugg and they got me paid.

Once again Pahokee fans shouldnt be talking. I should know I'm one of them! The way we ended the season was a shame! 35-0 we were defending state champs with worlds of talent! Yeah GC lost but even I'm not hating like that. They destroyed us at the Muck Bowl!To Pahokeeee.. "Shut up you making us look bad".

Raider Alumni '81 commented on December 15, 2009 at 7:55 p.m.: report abuse

To Pahokee Concerned Citizen!
Must you make it so obvious that you are out right hating. It is so sad that ignorance breaths in people like you in our community and then become side track because of empty words that serve no purpose at the expense of our young athletes feelings. You should use your comments to build up rather than tear down. No matter how much effort our young people put forth to get along its people like you who divide rather than encourage people to come together. We want to see all our young people make it and achieve great things regardless if we are from Pahokee or GC. Please do not make this loss about Pahokee and Glades Central, it is about your ignorant mentality. At the end of the day these remarkable athletes belong to all of us on the muck and we should be extremely proud of them instead of kicking them when they are already down with your inconsideratate comments. It sickens and pains my heart to know that it brings you pleasure to see Glades Central lose because Pahokee did not win. Either way both of our teams came up empted handed in a sense although at least we were runnerups. However, I am still extremely proud of their accomplishments this year. Do not distract from their moment by something that is irrevalant. We expect outside sources to do what you are doing, instead even people from Cocoa are commending our players although their team won the game. Dont you feel obligated to do the same. Now, regarding PK Pride, in reference to raiderette nation was she not doing what a fan does? I dont understand why it urk you that she was rejoicing when GC was winning, when you on the other hand rejoiced at her sadness when they were losing. We are from the same communinty and as I see it if you are not supporting your local team you are hating for whatever reason. Only you know the answer to that. What we can't admit to others is what we cant deny within ourselves. ( Heal yourself ) and move forward to support our youths. (Trust me, It does not make you a Raider) Just a Congratulator!!!!!! No matter what Glades Central has done in the past regarding their coaches, no one is asking Hester to leave. So Stop Instigating and Stop The Nonsense! TOGETHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL, POINT BLANK

Knowledge commented on December 16, 2009 at 12:21 p.m.: report abuse

Why are some of these Pahokee folks hating?
Yall lost Muck Bowl and lost 1st round.
But yall were the ones claiming GC was going to lose both.
We made it and you hate it. Yeah they lost but it wasn't a blow out.
The better team won, which was Cocoa. I give both team credit.
Both teams were undefeated and made it to state for a reason, can't
say the same for you all.

This is not for all of PK folks, just the ignorant ones.

First of all, i thought Cocoa had bad FCAT scores. If you guys are going to try and talk smack about how GC should have won, how about taking an english lesson first. Ebonics is not a language.

Second, for Raider for LIFE, if you think your school is not thuggish at all, then go talk to the Raider fan who decided to take a pee behind the porter potty instead of waiting in line. Please explain to me what your definition of thuggish is?

sayWHAT!!s commented on December 21, 2009 at 7:29 p.m.: report abuse

I'll be glad when people stop defining Belle Glade/Glades Central based off of a couple of people. Regardless where you from, there will always be somebody who show bad examples, doesn't mean the whole town/city is the exact same way.
