Drew Quinn took over at Park Vista with a clear understanding it would take some time to get his new program rolling.
John I. Leonard coach Jim Howell knew his program would take a step back after a recent run of success.
Their meeting Tuesday night in Lake Worth showed both have a way to go. Park Vista outlasted Leonard 56-54 in a sloppy, hand-wringing District 10-8A contest that featured 18 missed free throws and a lot more turnovers.
"We're still a very young group figuring out those situations," Quinn said. "We have a habit of getting into games like that."
Vista (13-8) led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter before relinquishing its lead in the third quarter. Leonard (8-10) even took a one-point in the third before sloppy ball handling and poor shot selection halted its momentum.
Keith Dow scored 18 points for Vista, and Calvin Chandler added 12. Vista shot just 4-of-13 from the foul line as a team, and Quinn tested his vocal cords often in the game's waning moments, as Leonard reduced a 10-point deficit to two in 45 seconds.
"When we're ready and right, we can play with anybody," Quinn said. "But sometimes we do that. It's a new situation for all of us, and how we respond to each experience is important for us going in the right direction."
It's been a tough stretch for Leonard, which lost two varsity players to midseason injuries and transfers. The Lancers, who won the District 10-8A title last year and reached the regional semifinals, have lost three in a row.
Romerrio Saunders pumped in 22 points and TJ Martin had 14, but Leonard's droughts killed hopes of a sustained rally.
"We didn't give up, so I'm proud of that -- we could have lost by 20," Howell said. "We just have to regroup."

Why is it that the Park Vista girls never get any recognition, or anything more than 1 line. Is it the reporter or the coach? Just curious bc they have good players and you never hear of them. !!

Curiousfan, it is not the coach, I know for a fact that the coach calls all scores in and highlights all the key players from each game. It is then up to the newspaper to write the story!

They are an unranked .500 team. Why would they write about them?

What? Do your research! PV is ranked #9 in the county and there record is 13 - 9. They have lost 5 games to teams that are ranked higher than them and to 2 teams out of broward that are ranked in the state. So before you go and make statements. Research and then speak!

The Post only really writes about Dwyer in girls basketball.
