Boys basketball: Dwyer tops Jupiter in overtime

Friday, February 05, 2010
by Joseph Kairalla

Second-ranked Dwyer rallied from an 18-point deficit to defeat fourth-ranked Jupiter 72-65 in overtime Friday night.

Guard Jacoby Brissett led Dwyer (19-3) with 31 points, including six of the Panthers' 10 points in overtime.

"Jacoby has been having trouble finishing games all year because of foul trouble, so tonight we gave him a little more rest," Dwyer coach Fred Ross said.

"It certainly paid off down the stretch."

The Warriors (19-4) jumped out to a 22-9 lead after the first period behind 13 points from senior guard Kevin Paxson, the leading scorer in Palm Beach County.

Paxson missed most of the second quarter with an eye injury, but Jupiter didn't slow down at all as the Warriors increased their lead to 39-21 at the break.

In the third period things unraveled for Paxson and the Warriors.

Leading 45-35, Paxson thought he was fouled on a layup attempt and argued over the non-call.

Paxson was immediately called for two technical fouls and ejected.

"All I said was 'Come on,' " explained Paxson. "But they had their mind made up I did something worse."

From there, the Panthers took over, scoring the next 11 points to take a 46-45 lead.

Jupiter, however, rebounded to take a 53-48 lead into the fourth quarter.

From there, the contest went back and forth, with the teams exchanging leads several times.

Dwyer led 62-60 with less than 10 seconds remaining when Jupiter's Ricky Shemanski, who finished with a team-high 26 points, made a driving layup to force the extra period.

The Panthers held Jupiter to three points in overtime to clinch the comeback victory.

"Definitely not one of the funnest or the easiest," Ross said of his team's victory, "but certainly a big win."

"All I said was 'Come on,' "
Yeah right. I was not at this game, but have seen Jupiter and Paxson play plenty of times. By far the dirtiest team that talks non-stop to the other team and the officials in the entire county. And Paxson is the leader of the pack. He is a very good player, but is always done in by his own lack of composure. He thinks he should get every call, complains to refs all the time, and just foul him semi-hard one time and he'll want to fight you on the court. And it carries over to the entire team, I don't think I've ever seen one Jupiter game where they haven't been in some sort of scuffle with the other team. Coincidence? I really like what their coach does, but I'm shocked his players don't have better control of their mouths and their emotions on the court. Saying "Come on" does not get you two technicals, but non-stop complaining and talking to other players and the refs just might. And now, good luck in the district tournament without your best player for a game or few.

No surprise if you weren't at the game... then you don't know what went down. You didn't see how dwyer has to take down our best player by clawing his face out when they saw that we were obviously beating them by like 20.. and he didn't come back for a whole 2 minutes before they started making BS calls just to get him out of the game... oh and btw Kevin might be good but Jupiter was doing just fine without him as well... them Jupiter boys work as a team and they're damn good at it!

alex commented on February 6, 2010 at 11:36 a.m.: flag

are you serious? the dirtiest team in the county?? what games do you go to? jupiter gets raped every game. you obviously don't now basketball.i was at the game and kevin Paxson did not deserve to get tossed! the dwyer score board operator tried to stop the clock with .3 left in the game so that dwyer could hit a buzzer beater and win. i have been watching high school basketball in this area for the last 15 years and i have never before seen a team try and cheat and win as boldly as i did last night with dwyer. they split Kevins eye on purpose right in front of me on the ground as there was a loose ball. then when jupiter tied the game at 60, they "accidentally" forgot to put up our 2 points on the scoreboard, therefore one of our players sees we are still losing on the scoreboard, gets confused and fouls. all in all the whole opeation at that school is a joke! dwyer will stop at nothing to win. even if it means taking kids out of gmaes with injuries, and having their own clock operator try and fix the game. sweet! exactly what we need to teach kids in a time like this in our world!

alex commented on February 6, 2010 at 12:05 p.m.: flag

first of all, please improve your 2nd grade grammar. secondly... yes, dwyer overall puts out better athletes. however they recruit their kids so its really not that impressive. im sure you are not an athlete, judging by how big a fan you are... myself on the other hand actually played d1 basketball. so thanks for teenage comments, but leave the blogging to people who actually know how to write. i had to read your comment like 10 times just to put together what the hell you were trying to say.

Jupiter was up by 18 at halftime... Anyone with any common basketball knowledge would know that dwyer is a terrible shooting team and struggles vs a zone defence. They will not go to lakeland this year becuase of it. Coach Ross is a recruiting machien and they still cant win a state title lately. Paxson wont even be suspended considering it was a non-flagerent foul and Jupiter should of easily blown out dwyer by 30 if it wasnt for a cheap elbow.

Jupiter Fan commented on February 6, 2010 at 12:09 p.m.: flag

And the "oh please" how are you going to write a comment if you werent at the game???????

Say what? commented on February 6, 2010 at 12:12 p.m.: flag

The clock operator was not from the district, it was Mr. Brown, a Dwyer administrator and the book was done by a former employer of Dwyers. Nice try though. Yea, jupiter always complains about dwyers sports? Try only football and basketball, because that where dwyer does their best recruiting of jupiters best athletes. But I guess you can add Martin County to that list if you get drift. And, why youre talking remember that those jupiter kids may be your doctor one day, so grow that.

Realtalk commented on February 6, 2010 at 12:15 p.m.: flag

Alright, I was sitting courtside at the game, here's my take:
It was all Jupiter in the first half, Dwyer couldn't buy a basket. Looked like a blowout was coming. It was VERY physical, lots of fouls.
In the second half, the teams started to get into foul trouble, Jupiter more so than Dwyer. At one point in the 3rd quarter, they had 4 starters with 4 fouls. They had to sit some guys, and they couldn't play a physical game anymore. (Only one ended up fouling out, but they really couldn't play strong defense) This, along with Paxson getting tossed, let them lose the lead very quickly.
Yeah, Paxson was talking a lot, but probably didn't deserve to get tossed. He was rightly frustrated for getting injured and missing the second quarter. The refs really let this get out of hand and they wanted to make an example out of him here. However, he wasn't arguing a clearly bad call and needed to just walk away once he got the T. That's on him. If Paxson stays in the game, and Dwyer doesn't get to shoot 4 technicals,it wouldn't have been close.
And the scorers table did fudge the scoreboard at the end of the game, and it was obvious that Jupiter fouled because of it... pretty disappointing that it came down to that. Overall, Jupiter was the better team, but they had to play most of the game without Paxson. Dwyer shot poorly the whole game, but getting Brisset to the foul line about 50 times was the best thing they did.
Big props to the fans who packed the gym and to all the players on both teams, this was one of the hardest fought basketball games I've ever seen, and neither deserved to lose.

Paxon is a good ball player, but he isn't a team player. He blew it for his team. Keep your mouth shut "Screech" and you win by 15. You'll be defending what happened and how your team was screwed 15 years from now when your working at Ale House.

I was at a game a couple of years ago when Jupiter fans had a "white out." Why not a green or gold out? After Dwyer beat you guys, your DJ played the Sanford and Son theme song. Probably one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen at a HS sporting event- even if half the d-bags from Jupiter didn't get it.

Maybe if Jupiter had an "elite medical academy student" at the game, John Paxon could have had a band-aid put on his cheek earlier? We will never know.

Nobody is intimated. The blackout was in response to former. It will be ok. Flag season is coming up. You can still salvage some pride.

I don't know about where Shamanski is zoned nor do I care. Why couldn't he put a bandaid on Screech's cheek? 52 seems like a hard-nosed kid. He probably dislikes him as much as the rest of the county.

Paxson spent 3 hours in the emergency room after the game. 8 stiches required.

J-Town Fan commented on February 6, 2010 at 9:11 p.m.: flag

It seemed like the Jupiter players were losing traction late in the game. At least 3-4 turnovers were caused by the ballhandler's slipping. Could the sneakers make that big a difference or was it just sheer speed causing the slippage. Bodies were flying and the floor was wet but Dwyer players were not slipping...

Champ commented on February 6, 2010 at 9:35 p.m.: flag

Okay, first of all, after watching last night's game, it's pretty obvious that Jupiter is a better team than Dwyer with Paxson. Dwyer will not return to Lakeland this year because they can't shoot. Besides Jacoby, nobody on their team was that impressive at all. The game was physical, as is to be expected in a rivalry game. The officiating seemed pretty even to me. Also, there is no disputing that Paxson is a pretty good player, but he is definetely a hothead who shoots alot to get his points. If he keeps his cool, Jupiter wins that game. The fact that Jupiter's two points were not added was unfortunate for them because I do believe that that was the reason for their kid fouling, but I'm not going to sit here and say that Dwyer was "cheating" because I honestly do not know. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Say what? commented on February 7, 2010 at 1:27 a.m.: flag

Common sense please Doug Long. First of all, Jupiter encourages their fans to have a white out for every home game. Its a white out because Jupiters home jerseys are white. Ever heard Jupiters cheerleaders when they cheer, "what about our colors, shout them, green, gold, green, gold, ahh WHITE, WHITE, WHITE, WHITE, WHITE." I know makes a lot sense now. And, I doubt Paxson will be working at the Ale House, in fact with his 4.3 hpa, you or someone you love may be working for him.

Jupiter is considered a dirty team now because they win. 5 or 6 years ago they played just as hard and physically but they were going 12-14 each season and losing to Dwyer by 30. Lets be real, if they looked differently (maybe a little more like dwyer), people would say they play hard and have swag instead they are dirty.

And, Shemanski is zoned for Dwyer, however, he was accepted solely on his academic prowess. He only began playing bball in 8th grade and if you saw him in 9th grade then you know he was not recruited for athletics. He is good now because he worked hard to hone his skills, which are pretty good. Just ask all dwyers big men.

Its also amazing the "voluntary transfers" dwyer gets each year. These voluntary transfers push other kids out when or even before they arrive. for example there are two at newman and one summit that were on dwyers bball team. Take a look 4 out of dwyers top 6 players are transfers.

And, Jupiter does have the best medical program in the county. Check which program has more state qualifiers in the county. But I digress, come on now it just so happens that dwyers choice programs have good athletes. Amazing how these good athletes just happen to apply to only dwyers choice programs. That "lottery system" seems to really favor good athletes at dwyer. The choice program is supposed to be the choice of students, not coaches trying to athletes into the school.

Say what? commented on February 7, 2010 at 1:29 a.m.: flag

on another note Jacoby Brissett is real.

Team Player commented on February 7, 2010 at 1:47 a.m.: flag

Jupiter actually builds a lead to 18 points after Paxson exits. Paxson re-enters in the second half, creates 2-3 turnovers, takes a couple of wild shots, then gets ejected and gives Dwyer 5 points at the line which allows them to draw within 5 points. The "team" battles to keep it close but doesn't have the depth to hang in OT. Jupiter did better without Paxson but lacks depth. Great effort and well coached. "Hats off" to the rest of the TEAM!!!

bogierae commented on February 7, 2010 at 2:39 p.m.: flag

The game Friday night came down to bad coaching. Kevin Paxson has been out of control for years. What a terrible way to end the regular season and begin play offs. The only reason why Kevin is the highest scorer in county is because he is a BALL HOG. It was nice to finally see Hoffman play his position. Its amazing how well the TEAM did without Paxson. I wonder what the stats are for Kevin's assists? ZERO? I will look forward to not seeing him play again. Friday nights outcome has been coming on for a while.

just a question...how is it that jupiter plays “dirty”?...is it because paxson,a talented player, mouths off every now and then?.. no one would give a thought about paxsons attitude if he wasnt the talanted athlete that he is... I could see how some people have backed up what they say about dwyer stopping the clock and recruiting... but what do you have to back up when you say jupiter has and always play dirty?...

only because we are the best commented on February 7, 2010 at 4:03 p.m.: flag

Let me starts this out right, first and fore most Jupiter dose not know what goes on at Dwyer and NO we do not know what goes on at Jupiter so really neither school needs to be talking about "recruting","score keeping",or "clock people". and i mean really give me a break,If you are going to talk sh** about Dwyer fine (not the i think its ok),but how dare you even start with Coach Ross!! Our coaches in our program work 24/7 to make sure the students/athletes that come to our school and would like to become a part of our Dwyer family know that if they work hard, that our staff will get them seen and get them where they want to be and will help them every step of the way and their parents also know that as well. Hence the reason our we have the talent we do,its not because of "recuting". Scouts know where to go when they are looking for tough well structured athletes. Get your facts straight before you get so bold and in attempt to look so smart!! I have watched Dwyer progress for the last four years and every year i never know what to expect i am always surprised every year....as for fridays game yes we got off to a very bad start and i will admit our shooting was very off,but i refuse to have any argument about weather or not we will make it to lakeland this year because like i said i am always being surprised by our team, but i do have full faith and confidence that they can do it!! What i find funny is that everyone writing from Jupiter keeps forgetting and/or leaving out the fact that we did beat you in the beginning of the season, and as i recall we WON on your court and might i add your clock people and WITH OUT an over time and WITH OUT Jacoby why? oh i think it was because he has resting his ankle and preparing for our STATE TITLE in football!!! Only one of the many glorious days for Dwyer...As far as the air conditioning we are more times then not freezing in our gym like earlier that day, it is our of our control if the air was going to turn off that night because do you really think we wanted to be in that or that or do you really think out boys wanted to be playing in that? He** NO....and i can promise you our staff was doing everything they could to get it to turn back on plus real athletes know how to play under any circumstances. Also calling people fat is real classy Jupiter and yes i will admit our screech cut outs were alittle over board but Jupiter we are like the step child of you and Gardens and we are stuck right in the middle and considering you have both been around alot longer than us...... CONGRATULATIONS Jupiter you have officially set the tone for us and what can say we have only learned from you. But thanks to our administration they tend to hold us to alittle higher standards. I love our Dwyer family and i am so happy to be apart of it!!!! =)
lots of love from a very active member of William.T.Dwyer!!!
P.S. our athletic director has done an amazing job at filling Mr.Hubbards shoes thank you

My point is that coach Ross is not a "recruting machine" as "juptier fan" on febuary 6th claims...

Please commented on February 7, 2010 at 11:14 p.m.: flag

Only because we are the best, I "agree" with you Coach Ross is not a "recruiting machine," the recruiting machine in the program is that guy Steve. You know who im talking about. Middle-aged white guy thats always around. He is the recruiting machine.

And you are surprised every year by Dwyer because you dont know what high school the new basketball players are going to transfer from until around july or august. Thats why you dont know what to expect. Maybe if Dwyer left the standout athletes from Jupiter and everywhere else alone then we would really see a true Dwyer vs Jupiter game. Because truth be told you won the first game because of Tia Harris (from where?). The second game was won because Jupiter was horrible from the free throw line (granted so was dwyer). If they make free throws they win by 10.

Oh and bogierae, kevin paxson is 6th in the area in assist for big schools. Hoffman is 2nd.

And jupiter was up by at least 13 with paxson in the game because they led 22-9 after the first qtr. People exaggerate a little on these blogs.

Tired of the Whining commented on February 8, 2010 at 11:27 p.m.: flag

Do you people really think that you know what goes on in these schools? Who do you think you are that you THINK you know why a kid goes to a certain school, what their GPA is, or why they have transferred? It's amazing to me that you all just keep running your mouths about things that you really do not know about. Yes, Dwyer has had some transfers...so what! A kid can transfer for many reasons, but the main one being this. If the kid plays a sport, you can bet that by the time they hit their high school years, that kid understands what it means to be in a winning program. UNFORTUNATELY, we live in a county that does not go by where you live is where you go to school. That was changed years ago with the bussing of kids into other areas to even out numbers! So quit all your whining...the COUNTY has opened up the avenues for these kids to get into their school of choice by programs such as magnet programs and no child left behind. If any of you have realized that a lot of schools go through a winning period and then a rebuilding period...look at Gardens...their winning years happen to end as Dwyers was beginning...and yes, it will also slow down and need time to rebuild. I'm sorry that Jupiter hasn't seemed to get out of the losing years, but you need to quit blaming it on "recruiting" and start looking at why kids choose NOT to go to Jupiter.
I personally know the Shemanski family, and you can put him on a pedestal if you want for choosing the Medical program. But the truth is he's a smart kid with a greater potential in medicine than in basketball, and he knows it! That's why he chose Jupiters Medical program...He's good, but he's not great, and he's going to choose a school based on his future in medicine, not on just a basketball program.
As for Paxson, he's a hot head and a ball hog, and Jupiter's coach should be ashamed that he hasn't been able to teach him self control, leadership, and respect...for his team, his coach, or others he plays with. He is a good player, but would be much more beneficial if he learned to assist his team (6th? not from what I've seen over the last 3 years...maybe its just against Dwyer), give the ball to a teammate once in a while, and keep his whining mouth shut. I was personally sorry that he got so hurt at Friday game, but if anyone was actually watching...he dove for the ball onto the ground with a few other players...his face was not intentionally gouged...as some of the other blogs have stated. People need to get their facts straight.
And on a last note, if Jupiter is so well behaved in all they do, can someone explain to me why when Dwyer goes to Jupiter, there is no altercations, yet, when Jupiter comes to Dwyer there are several fans taken out by police? Could it have been the cussing of fans, the parents that clearly where out of control while the scorekeeper was yelling at the refs that a basket (for Dwyer) did NOT count, or the Jupiter student body vandalizing banners in the gym? Hmmm, I know it was hot, since the air broke (oh, I'm sure that was intentional on our part...really?) but it seems to me that Jupiter is loaded with a bunch of hot heads...both on the court and off.

Unfortunately, it seems kids take the easy road and go to a winning program instead of going to their home school and turning their programs into winning ones. And the reason the sign was torn down was because the genius that had them put didnt check the work and the metal pieces holding them up were sticking. A jupiter student was cheering for his team and jumping up and downing and cut his head on it. Consequently (wrongfully), the sign came down.

Blame commented on February 9, 2010 at 8:47 a.m.: flag

So the kids take the easy road....that's a coaches fault? or the PARENT? Seems to me (as a parent of 5) that the decision to take the easy road or staying true to their "hometown school" is that of the family!

Ok, so the sign was not put up properly (even though its been there for well over a year...going through numerous games, pep rallies, and events)...but that does not give the other kids the right to take the sign, crumple it and shove it to the floor...which I personally witnessed. Again, its all in how you look at it...

Point being made...each school has their issues, each school has their haters, each school has good and not so good players, but to see Parents and Adults on here ripping apart kids is just pathetic.

And F_D-block...learn how to speak, spell, write, and get the facts before you go spouting off...more people may take you seriously.

yeah…I saw Paxson and some of he other players on Jupiter first hand when hey played TCHS. They instigate a lot of trash talk and I saw some players from Jupiter push other players in dead ball situations. I commend the TCHS players for keeping their heads. I know that the Jupiter players may be playing with a chip on their shoulders because of the past but the way to settle those things are on the scoreboard. They are a very talented team but it seems that they are trying to be tough when it really is not necessary. If the guidelines by the FHSAA are set then they should be carried out.

Everyone on here who thinks jupiter isn't a winning team should take a look at their record(19-4) they are, without a doubt, one of the best teams and, because of what they look like, are accused of dirty play when others would be comended for intensity. Although it is true that paxson was in the wrong, anybody would be a little frustrated after getting elbowed in the face, cut open, and then told it wasn't a foul. Who ever said Jupiter has no depth is sevearly wrong. Even with paxson gone they managed to hold off "the great panthers". All dwyer has is over-aged, bad players who are called good because of size. Jupiter on the other hand has good hard playing and working players. I would like to see any dwyer player go through the conditioning jupiters players go through, they wouldn't last a week. The district champs are back and more ready to win then anyone could ever know.
