Benjamin, Pope John Paul II, St. Andrew's leave districts to create independent football conference

Monday, January 09, 2012
by Matt Porter

In what is believed to be an unprecedented move in South Florida, a coalition of 14 small, mostly private schools in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties have withdrawn from their FHSAA-mandated football districts to create an independent conference for 2012.

The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, Pope John Paul II and St. Andrew's in Boca Raton and John Carroll in Fort Pierce are the area schools that will join the new league, tentatively called the South Florida Football Conference. It will begin play in September and end its season with North and South Division winners playing for an independent conference championship. The move is only for football.

Football coaches and administrators from the area schools, who were a combined 11-28 last season, said the split allows them to compete with schools of similar size that put an extra emphasis on academics over athletics. There are currently no plans to include more schools, but that may be an option in the coming years.

"When we first talked about it, it was like a breath of fresh air," Pope John Paul II Athletic Director and Football Coach Matt Dillon said. "It just made the most sense for our schools."

By declaring their independence in football, the schools remain bylaw-abiding members of the FHSAA, but are not eligible to participate in the state football playoffs. Instead, they will play a 10-game schedule with a built-in playoff system that involves all of the conference's 14 teams. The best players will earn all-conference recognition.

The move means Benjamin and Pope John will break from District 7-3A, leaving American Heritage, Cardinal Newman, King's Academy, Pahokee and Fort Lauderdale-Calvary Christian. John Carroll will exit District 4-3A. St. Andrew's will remain independent.

It also means the schools won't struggle against seemingly superior teams. For years there have been allegations by county coaches of schools, both public and private, bending FHSAA rules to attract players. Private schools are seen as freer to do so since they lack attendance boundaries and can offer financial aid packages.

"We're not trying to throw anybody under the bus," Dillon said. "They do things their way, we do things our way. Our way is, we're going to follow the letter of the law. We're excited and happy to be members of the FHSAA, and we're going to follow those rules. We're excited to be forming this league."

In the coming weeks, the conference will name a commissioner and create bylaws. Several sources involved in the process said those bylaws will include regulation of transfer student-athletes into member schools. They also will detail the process for entry into and dismissal from the conference.

A handful of the involved schools met at the time of last year's biannual FHSAA district realignment to discuss going independent, but the task proved too daunting at the time. They declared their independence in December.

"If you're coming to Benjamin for just football - or even athletics - you're coming to the wrong place," Benjamin Athletic Director Ryan Smith said. "We're preparing kids for the next 60 to 80 years of their lives. Not just in the short term, winning football games. We feel this league helps us accomplish that goal."

St. Andrew's, which previously could not take part in any playoffs because it was an independent, looks forward to vying for a championship.

"The last three games of the season, my coaches are worn out trying to motivate the kids," St. Andrew's football coach George McCartin sad. "The kids are playing for pride, that's all they're playing for. This is a really neat concept."

The two proposed divisions will consist of seven teams, many of whom already play one another. The North will be made up of Benjamin, Coral Springs Charter, John Carroll, Pine Crest, Pope John Paul II, St. Andrew's and Westminster Academy. The South Division is comprised of Coral Shores, Florida Christian, Marathon, Miami Country Day, Miami Curley, Miami La Salle and Ransom Everglades.

"We anticipate this possibly could grow," Smith said. "We wouldn't be doing this if we didn't think it would be a good thing. You've got teams with tremendous history. You've got teams that have been around for 50-plus years that have decided to do this. We've put a lot of thought into this, and we're gong to make sure this is a great experience for the schools and the student-athletes."

Coaches acknowledged that by creating their own conference, they could be seen as hiding from top-flight competition. They preferred to be realistic.

"Winning and losing is important to us," Benjamin football coach Ron Ream said. "We're all competitors. But you want to know that when you roll up your sleeves and work hard, you've got a chance. Some of us now roll up our sleeves and know we're not going to have a chance.

"It was so refreshing to sit there and listen to the other schools saying the same thing. We're all trying to do the same thing. Boy, was it refreshing."

SOUTH FLORIDA FOOTBALL CONFERENCE

NORTH DIVISION: Benjamin, Coral Springs Charter, John Carroll, Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale), Pope John Paul II, St. Andrew's, Westminster Academy (Fort Lauderdale).

SOUTH DIVISION: Archbishiop Curley (Miami), Coral Shores (Tavernier), Florida Christian (Miami), LaSalle (Miami), Marathon, Miami Country Day, Ransom Everglades (Miami).

WHO THEY'LL PLAY: Six games against division opponents, one game against opposite division, one open game. Each team will finish its schedule by Week 8. THE PLAYOFFS: Weeks 9 and 10 are reserved for a playoff tournament involving all teams. Week 11 is a bye week. In Week 12, the North and South winners will play for the conference championship.

It’s ironic that when you can’t compete or things don’t work in your favor the next best thing to do is change the rules to the game! I never thought the day would come when kids or penalize for being superior athletes! Because my son can’t compete or isn’t the first, second or third option, I change the dynamics of the game! Weight limit was introduced in recreational football, must play rule where all participants must play and mercy rule where the dominating team must pull their starters out the game regardless of the quarter. There is a litany of changes that have been injected to fit little Johnny or Jerome who are not athletic but promising players are penalize and stereotyped has jocks with little education. You want to prepare kids for the next 60 to 80 years? Tell me who you would rather hire the kid with straight A’s or the kid with the B+ on a curve or the kid that works hard at his trade and very knowledgeable or the kid who inherited the company or took the crash course. Yeah right, I don’t see concession being made for the less educated kids who have been deprived of funding and resources in urban areas. What loser would say Winning is not everything! Tell that to the several big corporations and political parties who spend millions to WIN elections so they can change the rules to the game.

@tellthetruth commented on January 9, 2012 at 9:53 p.m.: report abuse

What's ironic is that these school had to take such drastic measures because the FHSAA has done nothing to stop American Heritage from years of blatanly breaking the rules. Your championships mean nothing.

Justaparent commented on January 9, 2012 at 9:56 p.m.: report abuse

This is probably the best thing for these schools. With recruiting rampant in public and private schools, it is an interesting option. Most realistic way to deal with the truth, that most kids are not able to enjoy the athletic experience when they are stacked against these jacked teams.

It's a great idea. They should do that with soccer, softball and baseball too. The concept is a good one. Success to the new league and may they add soccer, baseball and softball to the conference and edit the name in to "South Florida Small School Sports Federation". ( SFSSSF)

Although I don't like the idea of not having the ability to participate in the FHSAA playoffs, i also dont like the idea of having to compete against teams who are superior only because of their methods in recruiting players and building teams. Anyone who truly thinks that teams like AH havent wrongfully recruited players into their football programs is clueless. Even the players and ex coaches from schools like AH admit to the wrongdoings within their athletic programs. So anyone that says anything about how they play fair and we're just jealous is wrong.

Nuff said commented on January 9, 2012 at 10:33 p.m.: report abuse

Sounds to me that these schools are placing athletics in the proper perspective. Sports are a part of the High School experience not the sole reason for showing up. The kids in these schools work hard at academics and fit football around studies. They will enter some top universities because of their grades and not even be looked at for a D1 program or scholarship. They will end up employing the kids who go to the football mills and never crack a book. Their life will be much richer for having balance.

What a bunch of whiners and losers! The top schools, like Cardinal Newman, seek to compete against the best - in academics and athletics - not against the worst! Hint to clueless administrators - hire quality coaches like Steve Walsh - then you won't have to make excuses for your poorly-run athletic programs.

we are talking about a few small schools and saying their reason for doing this is because they are losing on the field and the recruiting battle. Lets get real Pahokee has taken a beating of the past few years but I have not heard one complaint from their coaches, players, or fans why is that? Forest Hill has taken a beaten over the last decade by kids who suppose to go there instead of dwyer, lakes, john I, lake worth and etc, Spanish River has loss kids and taken a beating, Boynton has loss kids and have taken a beating and the list goes on. But the complaints comes from spoil brats, and parents of spoil brats and coaches that are trying to cover of the fact of bad coaching. And then you guys make the statement that AH, Dwyer kids will be asking for jobs from the private school kids are you serious? News those kids at dwyer and AH get their school payed for by athletics and can earn the same degree those other private school kids earn with a chance of advancing their careers in football, basketball or any other sport they choose to play. A fact football open a lot of doors in life, but to make an excuse for losing then run and form something that will be trash to watch doesnt make sense to me, why not put all teams in that league that have not had success over the years?

Observer commented on January 10, 2012 at 10:33 a.m.: report abuse

@Raising them up soft- I've heard tons of people from the schools you mentioned (PK, Forest Hill, River) complain. Is it better to just complain or actually do something about it?

D.L.H commented on January 10, 2012 at 10:49 a.m.: report abuse

It is not coaching. This goes beyond coaching. This is smart. Public schools cannot participate. They are under different guide lines. My boys were recruited, as 8th, and 7th graders. 6'1" 235 Lbs., and 6' 3" 265 Lbs. I played at 6'8" 320 lbs. I will not let my boys be swayed by a program that blatently recruits. The object is a fair league that competes for compitition sake. The key is enviornment, and education. This goes with tradition, and values. The offending school has little of the mentioned. I like the idea of my boys going to MIT, Harvard, U of Chicago etc.

@observer commented on January 10, 2012 at 10:53 a.m.: report abuse

Doing something about it is not going out forming another conference thats running and if I had a son that go to one of those schools im pulling him out. Also me being around I have never heard one kid from pahokee or coach mention 1 thing about that so I dont know who you have been listening to Heck they play Glades Central every year so why complain about Hertiage? Forest hill kids just happy to be out there competeing with the hope of one day it will turn around and spanish river showed that they are getting better. But again teach the kids hard work and failure is not always a bad thing we all lose in something but stand up and go back and keep trying instead of running out looking for the easy way. Let me make this clear I dont like whats happening either with all the illegal recruiting thats going on but I truly think its more of the kids and parents sending their kids there than the coaches recruiting them but i can be wrong on that but I think its more of the parents. If those kids are true athletes it means more beating teams like pahokee and AH instead of a school with a 5'3 QB.

The article said some small and private so why you feel that public can't participate? and what guidelines we are talking about? And if your sons are that big it should not matter who they step on the field with at a high school level. And your right we want all of our children to get that type of education as well but you missing that fact that they can still get that type of education at Duke, Stanford, Maryland and Cal and still enjoy playing the game at a high level

To the folks out there saying that certain losing schools out there are not complaining (aka: not leaving the FHSAA) and that schools like Benjamin and PJP are pussies for giving up, you need to understand one thing; Schools like Pahokee and Forest Hill HAVE ATHLETES. They just suck and hope they will be able to turn around their programs. Glades Day, American Heritage and Jupiter Christian HAVE ATHLETES, albeit they may have recruited half of them. These schools leaving their conferences do not have athletes to compete with the American Heritages, etc...

For example, you can't ask an Ivy League football program to be able to compete with the likes of SEC and ACC schools. It's not fair to punish the kids because their school does not bring in the type of athletes that some do. Coaching at many of these superior academic schools is on par with the likes of Glades Central, Dwyer, Heritage, Glades Day, etc. They just do not have the tools.

The new football conference is nothing less than an indictment of the Fhsaa's failure to aggressively enforce its own rules concerning recruitment. It would be a great public service if the Post would start investigating and asking questions of the FHSAA concerning the number of recruitment investigations it has conducted over the past three years and the results, if any. Would also be great for the Post to ask for information from coaches, administrators and the public concerning recruitment of players in this area in all sports. Would respect the coaches and administrators much more if they pooled their efforts to combat recruitment rather than run from the problem and form this new conference. No doubt there are at least several coaches and schools that are using the recruitment issue as an excuse for their own failures.

Another thing, our quote scholarship came from a booster who paid our tuition. So please each one of these schools has there own method of getting kids in. What's funny is the guy paying our tuition transferred his own son , first to Heritage for one day, said he was disappointed he did not stick it out, then next week he was at Boca High. I watched American Heritage play over the Christmas holidays and I have to be honest, they really are the best coached group I have seen in some time. Yes , tlmenplayers transfer there, but you cannot blame parents for wanting the best football education for there children if that's what they are trying to pursue. I can guarantee one thing, losing sucks, but teaching your child to take the easy path to successful is a worse crime. ......

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. Yesterday, a poster, now deleted, said that the St. Andrew's coach uses intimidation and retriubution to run his program. This is his opinion and he is entitled to it. Has the Post ever considered that if this is true, that the Post's blog, becuase it allows one to remain anonymous, might be the only avenue these people might have to express their frustrations with their coach and program. The reality is that Parents nor modern day kids cant handle losing and they would rather play schools that little johny can feel great against. Its all formed from youth league. If you cant play for a team you leave it and join another aau team. If you cant play for that team then your dad creates a team. High school is disapointing now,,,, Second issue does this now mean that you can miss practice and still play or that you dont have to practice as long or coach as hard( sadly I have seen it happen as I was at one of the schools who did it ) After a year or two the kids realized they didnt have to work as hard to be competative as the school and coach handled that with their scheduling.. ITs really a bad thing that just keeps moving up in age.

JUST REMEMBER ITS NOT THAT HARD TO GO FROM DIVISION 1 TO THE DIVISION OF PARKS AND RECREATION, MAKE SURE THE GRASS IS CUT AND THE FIELD IS LINED THE SMART KIDS ARE PLAYING TONIGHT.

These Teams are just doing what the FHSAA already does, but carrying it to an eqitable conclusion. Does a 1A or 2A school play an 8A School for the Championship??? NO!!!! This will be better for the Athletes at these Schools.
In fact, I see this snowballing !!

SmartMove commented on January 13, 2012 at 11:18 p.m.: report abuse

Great move by smart people. It is about time somone put sport in the proper place and set an example, and I agree it may snowball. The money in sports these days is a waste and needs to be corrected. It doesn't teach competition, it teaches arrogance and a fictional reality that for many comes to an end and throws them in the trash with nothing to turn to. College football has changed for the worse and what the Ivy League did years ago is no different than what these schools have done. Best statement that could be made and they should and are congratulated. Those that don't understand aren't the cream of any crop and should learn from those who understand what is better for the kids. AH, GD etc., are no different tha the NCAA violators like Ohio State, Auburn, etc., and you get tired of it. They have different priorities and that is fine for them. At least now parents can choose their priority- athletics or academics, for studen-athletes. Good move it will work for their benefit and be a model for many throughout the US.

Ain't No Ignoramous commented on January 14, 2012 at 7:42 a.m.: report abuse

Unlike the offending schools who recruit, many of the schools who formed this new league require testing to get in, so academics is the priority and the issue. 90% of the All League athletes on the offending school teams couldn't academicly get into schools like St. Andrews, Benjamin, et al. So, yes, it is about athletics. I remember when Benjamin played some school from Miam for the regional championship. The whole team from Miami were convicted felons. Ivy League teams have no chance of beating Alabama, et al... they place academics first, rather than athletics. And yes, they will be the leaders of this country-- always have and always will. I agree with SmartMove fully.

Here is a college perspective on the issue-- there are many others- the Ivy League had it right years ago:

Our local independent boktsoore ordered this for us. We got it on Thursday, I finished yesterday, husband is finishing today. This is one awesome book. I missed Ben, Rose, and the whole family. So good to see everybody is still surviving, still thriving. The character of New Orleans in this book is so rich, so perfectly structured. The physical layout, the smells, the sights, the attitudes of the people are so well drawn, I could go there and fit right in.The plot is dynamite the this book only people are really interesting and full dimensional (including the victim). I really like that people from earlier books haven't disappeared, but become part of M. Janvier's life, like they would in real life.If you have missed these wonderful people, be sure to read this as soon as possible
