It's no secret how good top-ranked Dwyer is with standout senior center Kai James on the floor, but ninth-ranked Palm Beach Gardens found out Wednesday night that the Panthers are still very good without James in the lineup.
James, who missed practice Tuesday because she was feeling ill, sat out the first half and the first two minutes of the third quarter, but her teammates picked up the slack in her absence and breezed to a 64-47 win against their crosstown rivals.
"I don't want Kai to be the one central player. I wanted to see them work together without her," Dwyer coach Jeryl Akin said.
Junior guard Keyanna Harris turned in her best performance of the season with a triple-double. Harris scored a team-high 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had 10 assists for the Panthers, who improved to 6-1, the only loss coming last Saturday in Orlando to two-time defending state champion Dr. Phillips.
Senior forward Ayanna Holmes also made a major contribution to the Panthers' victory, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior forward Kiandra Bowers also had 11 rebounds and eight points. James, who recently signed with Florida State, had 12 points in less than a half on the court.
"That's what I want them to do," Akins said. "I want more team ball. I'm pleased with them as far as their defense goes. The offense is coming, but we need to work more on our half-court offense because we can be a little stagnant, especially against a zone (defense)."
Palm Beach Gardens, ranked No. 9 in the area, fell to 3-3 on the season. Palm Beach Gardens (9-3) stayed close for most of the first half, but a late second-quarter spurt by the Panthers gave them a 33-23 lead at halftime. Dwyer extended the lead to 50-30 by the end of the third quarter.
Senior guard Brigitte Zavithsanos scored a game-high 21 points to lead Gardens, and Imani White chipped in 10 points for the Gators.
"We didn't play very well there just before the end of the first half and in the third quarter," Gardens coach Charlie Reppel said. "We hustled though. (Dwyer's) a great team and they have some great athletes."
