American Heritage falls 34-17 to University in Class 3A regional final

Friday, November 23, 2012
by Jackson Wolek

Errors by its special teams and struggles stopping University-Fort Lauderdale's running attack Friday night cost American Heritage an opportunity for a second consecutive state championship.

In a matchup of arguably the state's top Class 3A teams, the Stallions (11-1) allowed 288 yards on the ground and gave up 17 points off turnovers in a 34-17 regional final loss to University-Fort Lauderdale.

The Stallions scored on the first play of the game, an 85-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Marcus Davis to Trenard Davis.

Marcus Davis, however, would later cost the Stallions seven points on a fumble at the 1-yard line on a punt return, resulting in University's Jordan Scarlett rushing it in for a 1-yard score.

The Stallions also gave up two more points on a bad snap on a punt attempt that went into the back of the end zone.

The half ended with the Stallions leading 17-12 over the Suns, thanks to a 5-yard rushing touchdown and a 32-yard field goal from Greg Joseph.

That would be all the scores the Stallions would muster, as the Suns scored 22 unanswered points in the second half. Scarlett finished with 245 rushing yards two touchdowns.

It's a shame the only pbc team with a chance lost..... But helll yeah some one had to put them in their place.

Sometimes it bites you in the azz when your head gets that big...

Sucks for all the kids who left their schools for a state chip since your out in the second round.....

Great article...but to be honest it doesnt tell how it really went down! AHD was held to 62 yards rushing..period!! The University school handled all and everything handed to them by AHD..just as a superior football team does! Try and give the #7 team in the nation the credit it so deserves. And so much for that cocoa game not meaning anything, i guess University is for real... they did just beat the great AHD by 17!

Greg....whoooooo? How about that Jordan Scarlett!!!!!! AH you had a nice run! You played two legit teams....maybe 3 (Dwyer..very fortunate to win) and you lost. No worries..you'll probably still finish 2nd in the state. And let the Uschool dynasty begin!

Maximus commented on November 24, 2012 at 1:07 a.m.: report abuse

I agree with coach 100%! How about giving Uschool some credit? Your write up makes the reader think AH completely handed the game to Uschool! Are you the one who said AH is a lock for the state championship game? Btw How many yards did Bryant have? Uschool is legit! Guess that thrashing they took from Cocoa did mean something. See you in Orlando!

Just read the stat sheet commented on November 24, 2012 at 2:46 p.m.: report abuse

Kelvin Taylor carries the rock 40 times, Greg Bryant only 9, GB caught 3 balls. Your all-american touches the ball only 12 times and you expext to win. The OC must be drinking the kool-aid causing him to forget what AH is. A run the ball offense.

@ dont blame King...true prospective commented on November 24, 2012 at 4:41 p.m.: report abuse

While the D was not fantastic they were ok for most of the game...they just got worn down from constantly being on the field. On top of that, U school had a pick 6, a muffed punt on the 2 yd line, a safety, and another FG off a turnover. That's 19 of the 34 points so dont put it on the Heritage D.

@ dont blame King...true prospective commented on November 24, 2012 at 4:42 p.m.: report abuse

University's Defense was fantastic, but AH did shoot themselves in the foot. They could have been up 21-3 and halftime had it not been for 2 bad snaps and a muffed punt. They also had a bunch of costly penalties. And the play-calling and adjustments were horrible by the coaches. You just cant do all that and expect to beat a great team like University.

@ yes blame king commented on November 24, 2012 at 4:48 p.m.: report abuse

how would #80 have changed the game?

coach commented on November 24, 2012 at 5:51 p.m.: report abuse

In closing... The University school defense pitched a shut out in the second half.. Exposing an offense which only has (2) play makers! Its always been stop #4 and #1, so stop blaming the OC! The University school defensive scheme was brilliant in doing just that, it exposed AH for what it has always been..predictable!! The US defensive scheme took #4 n #1 out of the game tempting AH to beat them with some one else like #80 LOL aint happening and they did this by (playing 2 against 3 in cov 3). Lets not forget one other thing.... When a defense allows a RB to go for 250 YDS..GOOD NIGHT!! As a good friend of mine always says..."Why aint the defense working" LOL... ENough said and good night!

@ coach commented on November 24, 2012 at 9:24 p.m.: report abuse

Yes they gave up a lot of rushing yards...but if AH was up 21-3 how much rushing would University be doing? They wouldnt...also they got a lot of the rushing yard late in that game showing that they wore down the AH defense.

they University defense did "expose" AH's offense and it only too about 7 or more D1 caliber kids to do it. The AH playcalling was bad and could not adjust to what US was doing. The slot corner was cheeting run every time yet AH apparently never heard of play action or roll outs.

AH has many more than 2 playmakers...but so does the University defense

coach commented on November 24, 2012 at 10:43 p.m.: report abuse

You keep refering to 21-3?? and yes AH did run play action it was out of their "pistol set" and davis couldnt roll out because he had a US defender containing or pressuring him the entire game. AH NEVER HAD A SUSTAINED DRIVE OF MORE THAN 50 YDS THE WHOLE GAME...THEY WERE 3 N OUT MOST OF THE NIGHT!!!! Greg bryant stopped getting the ball because he was held to a season low of 3 yds a carry on 12 carries?? Did you expect them to continue giving him the ball, he was hit in the back field before he could get started!! A) the first TD AHD got came off of an 85 yd WR screen which was defended well and realistically should have been a 5 yd gain, but thanks to 4 missed tackles it went for 85. Thats TD #1. TD#2 came after US held AH to a 3 and out punting situation, when a US defender ran into the kicker and got flaged for a 15 yd penalty and an auto 1st down AH drove 41 yds and scored on 3rd and long on a broken play where #1 scrambled and got the corner "broken play" thats 14 pts! And the last time AH sniffed the redzone was in the 2nd qtr at the US "6 inch" line where the US defense stone walled on 1st and 2nd down-AH couldnt even get 6inches..then on third it was a mis-handled snap which is a part of football its called execution!! So please stop making it seem like points were left on the field due to AH mishaps, its quite the contrary!. Now lets not forget about all the points left on the field by US.. the wide open #6 on a post play which the US qb threw into the dirt--he would have walked in the end zone! 2 missed field goals and as far as rushing yards late in the game? #1 for US had 122 yds in the first half and 134 in the 2nd half he averaged 9 yards a carry!! US had 15 first downs to AH 6!! Enough said ENJOY YOUR OFF SEASON and a very dismal football team with out the only 2 play makers you had...#1 and #4

I was a spectator at this game. Had no preference as to who won. I can say thay University should just be thankful for this Thanksgiving gift. Biggest problem with University is all the rap. King called it bad. Defense did there thing. Linebackers played poorly period. Ball holder made a bad decision, Davis made a bad decision, AH could have come back if the refs werent so blatantly against AH. Annou.cer was basically calling the 1st downs and then the refs were moving the chains. Refs called encroachment 3 times, farse, they called pass interference on a tipped ball, 5 yard penalty against University while 3 of there players pulled Davis down by his face mask. Extremely poor ball plavement to benefit US. The ref standing by the play didnt throw the flags, but the one in the end zone saw it? Poor, poor officiating. I never blame refs for a game but this was some of the most blatant disregard of the rules I have seen as a football coach. The worst officiating I have seen since the NFLs replacement refs. To take anything away from Greg Bryant because of this game is shameful. Shame on you and shame on those refs. Absolutely absurd and if I was any of those coaches I would send the film to the FHSAA so that you van protext orher teams from this extremely poor officiating.

I saw the game. Simply put Univ. has better, and more athletes. The coaching was ok on both sides. Both schools recruit. So one school will get a banner, or a trophy. That doesn't increase ones salary, or insure a better retirement. There are better coaching staffs, but not as much talent. So who gives a screw? Anyone who was at the game knows it could have easily been 20-3 Heritage at halftime. Marcus Davis made the biggest bonehead play of his career giving the ball to University inside the 5 yard line (handing them 7 points), Heritage then had a high snap on a punt go out the back of their own end zone for a safety( handing Uschool another 2 points) and then to finish off the half Heritage had the ball at Univerity's 1 yard line and only came up with 3 points instead of 7. University did, for the most part, dominate the second half though. You have to question coaching tactics by Heritage. Greg Bryant only had 10 carries; that just can't happen in a big time football game. Tyler Provo had zero balls thrown his way. I just can't understand how they failed to utilize him and find creative ways to get the ball to big time play makers ALL YEAR. Then the normally very stout defense was spread out and forced to play nickel and dime coverages and Scarlett had huge runs right up the pipe. When it comes down to it, Heritage did not show up in the second half, their coaches failed the players, and the refs added insult to injury. Heritage really could have won this game and definitely had the horses but congratulations to University. Bring the trophy back to South Florida.

I was at the game and US was a better team. I question the game plan of not getting the ball to GB? The top recruit in the country should have had the ball more than four times in the first half. And by the way Scarlett is only a Soph so no you will not see him in the Army game until 2015. That kid was the best player on the field bar none.

HonorTheBoys commented on November 25, 2012 at 4:41 p.m.: report abuse

The Coaching Transition at AHS was a disaster (Coach Sizemore got way more to handle than anyone should have asked) and Coach King simply never got it -- the error was that no one was up to telling him he couldn't do it. There were only two names he knows on the team and he did not do either of them justice. Lousy practice makes for lousy results.

The most talented backfield in the country and his answer is to spllit five wide and have one of the nations leading rushers in a wide out role? Are you kiddling me... Greg never once came out o fthe backfield, no play action, no option... King gutted the offense down to a few plays and counted on athletes, not team work..

Those boys worked their ass off to get this shot --- they are talented and a team and all it takes is for a collossal failure in leadership to put the ship in the ground.

US won the game 100% -- but credit a strong game plan, amazing coaching and consistancy... 12 games into the season and AHS is getting penalties for not getting a plan into the huddle.

Good luck US -- I'm sad for the AHS players -- but maybe this will wake someone up.

When you have first and goal from the one yard line and do not give the ball to Greg, that's poor coaching. First and goal, quarterback sneak, 2nd and goal qb in the shot gun and the ball was snapped high, instead of throwing the ball away, the qb ran out of bounds 8 yds back, bad move on qb. Not making excuses but you must give the ball to Greg in that situation. That was a big heartbreak!!

I also heard the rumor that DS faxed over 50 pages of AH game plan to US which would explain why they played so well. I don't blame these boys for calling out the US when they have been robbed of a win, i'm sure US would be doing the same. US couldn't win on their own so they had to stoop down to DS’s level. Someone said “You associate yourselves with questionable characters and expect integrity when things go awry” well what does that say for US?? AH had an undefeated season without any assistance from any outsiders, these boys are great athletes and it’s sad that their only loss was their last. Many people on here have a lot to say about AH but don’t have any firsthand experience about what they are talking about, AH is no different than any other high school.

I will say it again, USchool was better than Delray last year and they were better than them again this year. The better team won. Had nothing to do with a fax. University did not earn a Top 10 national ranking by using faxed information from anonymous sources. Listen to how you sound.
