BOWLER OF THE YEAR
KAYLA KANARICK, PARK VISTA, JUNIOR
Kayla Kanarick didn't place first in the state bowling tournament, but that's fine with her, because she was largely responsible for leading Park Vista to its first state team championship.
Kanarick moved up the ranks of being a substitute her freshmen year, to becoming a starter her sophomore year, and to eventually being named the starting anchor bowler for the Cobras as a junior this season.
Anchor bowler is the position each team's best bowler fills. While this spot requires a lot of responsibility and added pressure, Kanarick did what was needed, putting her team before herself.
"I was focusing more on my team during state, so I didn't want to keep going during individuals because it was more important for the team because we have a senior and I wanted to make it her best year," Kanarick said.
Kanarick continued to compete despite injuring her foot when a bowling ball dropped on it earlier in the individual competition.
Kanarick averaged a county-high 197 and placed second at districts.
"It happened during individuals, and that's when I just didn't want to keep going because I was in pain and I had to wrap it up for the rest of the matches. But I pulled through it," Kanarick said.
Kanarick says that next year's goal remains the same: go to state and repeat as state champions. Any individual accomplishments will be secondary.

Wow, some controversy in Boy's Bowling! T.J. Moore was named PBC Boy's Bowler of the Year by the Sun Sentinel and you guys have him as Honorable Mention? Someone got that wrong big time! Did you decide to not name a Boy's Bowler of the Year?

Park Vista boys won County and District titles, yet had only one member listed. Beat Boca both times and Boca has three members on 1st team. Who picks these teams? Is it the coaches or the Post's writers?

Marc, it certainly is an unusual list. I'm the father of one of the Boca players and my eyebrows went up some. Besides TJ, both Brandons (Baker and Fisher) were silly omissions. Armand is 1st team here but only HM on the Sun Sentinel team.
In my opinion, if you take the full body of work into account, the Boy's Bowler of the Year was pretty much a three-way tie: TJ had the highest regular season average but didn't bowl well at Districts and missed States. Ryan had the second highest average for the season and finished 33rd at State, while Alex had the third best season average and finished best for PBC at States, 21st, missing the knockout stage by 5 pins.
It just seems like the PB Post decided they had to get as many northern and central players into the team as possible, even though pretty much all the top bowlers this year were in the south conference.
There were SEVEN PBC 200-plus season averages and they were ALL in the Southern conference.

Largely is an understatement, the entire team bowled extremely well but Kayla broke a lot of teams' hearts and spirits. She must have struck 75-80% of the time in the 10th frame during bakers which is HUGE. I watched the other teams just deflate with each strike she threw. They lose one starter and return their top 3 avgerages so they are in a prime position to repeat. I am very proud of everything they accomplished this year even though I coach a rival. Santaluces girls- PBC boys- Vista girls, 3 state champions from 3 different schools. Throw in Speanburg at Jupiter for individuals and Palm Beach has proven to be the most diversely talented county in the state.

I agree with Marc & Lee. Looks like the Post took the easy way & only looked at District results. What about season averages, high series, high games & the County tournament? TJ Moore should definitely be on the 1st team. The winner of the boys’ individual at the County tourney isn’t even included in the Post lists but is on the 2nd team in the Sentinel.

The only thing I'll say about John, Marc, and Lee's comments is that, as the organizer of the county tournament, no one ask me for any results. Unfortunately though we were not able to finish the touyrnament due to Hurricane Sandy.

@OBCCoach - I'm not sure what your comment is about. Is it about knocking the Post? It seems like what you wrote kind of supports our positions. If the County's were cancelled then the regular season should take more emphasis.
Ask the coaches commented on January 12, 2013 at 5:37 p.m.: report abuse
The biggest problem with the Post's awards are they do not ask the coaches about who should be on the all-county teams for most sports. If it's not football, baseball, or baseketball, they just look at the few "traditional" schools for sports or take names they see often. They need to ask all the coaches who should win the awards for players and coaches.
@pbccoach......just curious, did they ask for your input? No? Enough said.
