In my opinion hands down the best x and o coach in the county is the coach at Benjamin. Most will say Ross, Smith, or Hands but give the benjamin coach their talent and he wins state championships at any level.

I wouldn't say Smith because he has always coached at a private school and he had the advantage of recruitng. Ross is a good coach and he has won multiple state championships. Hands is a good coach as well. Cavallo, don't know anything about him but Benjamin aint neva been no powerhouse.

Once again no one has explained how do you determine who is a coach or not. Its easy to coach talent. If either of those coaches were at forest hill, seminole ridge, suncoast or olympic heights would they still be considered proven coaches. First of all neither would even accept the challenge if it was the last job available. So you cant determine whether they are proven coaches because each one has always had the best talent in the county on there teams.

Fred Ross' coaching stint at Jupiter was not a success by any means. As with most sports it takes good talent to get to states consistently. Unfortunately if you ain't cheating you ain't competing year in and year out like like Ross, Smith,Dawson, Hands. The best coaches are the ones who develop and grow talent over 4 years from their zones.

If you going to look at only putting on the floor the talent you have that goes to your school with ZERO recruiting. Matt Colin at Wellington High School has done a fantastic job at that school. He has consistently had successful seasons. I would also mention Coach Howell at John I, good solid coach with good seasons year in and year out.

Brad Flag at Atlantic. Finally winning consistently at a school that had talent every year. Colin does good job at Welly too. Howell ?? Not sure about the actual coaching part with X's and O's they play too much one on one and street ball, but at least he keeps them together and out of trouble which has always been that programs problem. Very true about Ross at Jupiter very average coach there.

All of these men are great Coaches. Beauty will be in the eye of the beholder. To me a great Coach is a Coach that gets his kids to flourish and grow as individuals under there mentoring. I look at the kids going to College, etc... the same way I do about defense and scoring. All great Coaches have one thing in common, the kids take on there philosophy and learn from the Coaches.

If a team plays great defense they will win, anyone can score and it is expected that offense will come from a player.

If a Coach does a great job mentoring and working hard for his kids then Scholarships and Winning could come.

That being said, talent has a lot to do with it. Players will go where they feel they have the best chance to promote there own agenda's. Therefore, they will go to Dwyer over another school in that area. They will go to Atlantic over another school in that area. These are today realities but they change.

For example, Willie Gibson was hands down one of the best Coaches in Southern Palm Beach County. He is gone, now the program is struggling to get back to where it was, and kids are going to Atlantic from the same Geographical Location.

For example, it was not long ago that Lakes was the real deal in Northern Palm Beach County. Now Dwyer is in the spot light.

It really is a moving target, recruiting is not necessarily done by design, it is done by mentoring which turns into winning. Not the other way around.

I would have to say coach McCoy from forest hill. He knows his stuff, is good at teaching, an does his very best to keep players disciplined. Unfortunately hasnt had the talent on his teams, and the little bit of talent that he does have just doesnt care or lack grades. It makes me very upset that most of players at forest hill act like this, if i had an opportunity to play for him best believe i will give everything i have every practice and game. He is mos def one of the best coaches in this county. Also coach Howell from john i

Best coaches in county - you jokers always look at win / loss. That don't mean they the best coach. It only means thay got talent. When Ross was at Jupiter his teams were garbage - ask anyone who know the history of pbc. When he got talent at Dwyer the teams were good. DUH. Same at pro level. TALENT RULES. except when u got talent and a bad coach, then it's not good. Look at j.i leonard some years - lots of talent but no team work. Now, scholarships not a sign of good coaching. Some teams play good team ball and are good but not good enough talent to play at college level. Few kids can play at D1,2 or 3 from pbc. U think they can but they can't. Lot's of talent out there to compete against. Gibson was only best when he had talent. How'd he do last two years at Village? Not good because he don't got TALENT. but he good at getting the kids at Village to play better than they might if he ain't coaching.

The question should not be who is the best coach in PBC, but who is the best coach in PBC that respects the rules? The FHSAA bans all recruiting. Yet coaches such as Fred Ross and Murray Smith continue to flaunt the rules by recruiting players from other schools. Are they good coaches? No, they are good recruiters. Put either one of these men at Forest Hill and they would have a losing record. There are many good coaches in PBC that play by the rules. Students will go to these schools, learn how to play the game the right way and graduate. The students that go to Dwyer and now Lake Worth will only learn the lesson that success can be bought. Finally, as for the decision of Lake Worth to hire Murray Smith, one has to wonder what Principal Lockhart is thinking. Lake Worth has a proud basketball history. Is it really that bad that they have to hire a carpetbagger such as Smith to resuscitate the program? There is a lot of talent in the Lake Worth area. How are these kids going to react when Smith starts recruiting kids from outside Lake Worth?

Wow, let's resort to racist remarks. What would you know about coach Smith and his family? A carpet bagger is a very derogatory term. So, Murray, because of his skin color, cannot possibly be in the proffession he is, because he cares about kids, is a teacher, and loves basketball? He and his family are wonderful people that have worked their whole lives with people of all walks of life. His parents teach English to the Asian community, and have given more years of service to bettering any community they have lived in. Murray has lived and worked here for 30 plus years. He has worked in some tough school districts, and now he is a carpetbagger? He genuinely cares for the kids he has taught. I have been with him at dinner many times and former students always come up to him with a smile. So, there is nothing good about Murray Smith? Is it jealousy that makes people hate winning coaches? So let's resort to calling people racist terms, because that definitely helps win a disagreement. Get over yourself Zman.

It's always interesting to see someone use the race card, especially when they don't know what they are talking about. A carpetbagger was a Northerner or Yankee who went down to the south after the Civil War in order to make money. Carpetbaggers were despised by all southerners because they made profits on people who had been at war for years. The term is often used to describe an outsider who seeks to make gains by meddling in others affairs. Coach Smith is an outsider to other schools that seeks to make gains by taking their best basketball players. There is no racism here. He is an opportunist who seeks to recruit other schools players in violation of the FHSAA rules. I don't know what Coach Smith is like. Perhaps he helps old women cross the street and kisses babies. However, his reputation in the PBC basketball community is that of a recruiter and cheater.

The irony of the last message is I doubt whoever wrote it could define the terms carpet or bag. Next time you write try to use proper grammar. The fact that you can't complete a proper sentence or use correct punctuation diminishes anything you have to say. I'm sure you're a close personal friend of Coach Smith. Perhaps, he taught you how to write? For all of you yahoos who defend the actions of coaches who recruit (see Dwyer, Grandview Prep, American Heritage, etc.), check the FHSAA rules on recruiting. I'll give you all a hint: it's not allowed.

May I ask why does this bother you so much if a coach does recruit? If the parent felt confident that the kid home school will offer what they want they would send him to that school. It's ashame that the grown-ups are the ones doing all the complaining and the kids just play ball.

Listen, I have known Smitty for years. He does recruit and that's what he is suppose to do. Same for Ross. They better get an edge and the magnet programs allow that. Also, when Ross was at Jupiter, they got their heads beat in. They were not good at all because they played with kids from the community. No magnets. That doesn't make Ross a bad coach. Its just hard to WIN when you have no talent. When Ross first got to Dwyer, they didn't recruit. He won with players from the RAW. Most if not all of those kids were zoned to got to Dwyer. But since the magnet programs have been put in place, kids go to schools out of their zone. When you win, kids want to play for you. Ross doesn't personally recruit players. Most of them just come to Dwyer because they always have a good team.

So what if I don't use proper grammar and punctuation all the time. Sorry I am not qualified to write on this blog and my argument is lost because of that. I still hear a lot of jealousy in your rantings. And then there is still the fact that you resorted to name calling, be it racial or otherwise, and now insulting people who defend Smith. I still don't understand your obsession with Coach Smith...maybe you could follow him around with a video recorder and document what a sleaze ball he really is. Yeah, I am a friend of Coach Smith, so what. If someone were trashing you personally, would you want someone to defend you? Especially if it were fabricated stories?? Let's be honest. We all know this truth: Parents are the ones who shop their kids around to Coaches. I have seen it time and again. Parents bring their kids to every open gym they can to find. They look for a coach, and a staff, that will help their child the most. The only way to stop "recruiting", is to do away with magnets, and that is never going to happen.
I await your corrections for my bad punctuation, and lack of good grammar.

You mentioned wikipedia in a previous post but you never read the article. It is not a racial term. Even if it was a racist comment how does that effect Coach Smith, because last I heard he's white. Your friend was fired at Cardinal Neuman for recruiting. He was booted out of Palm Beach Lakes for trying to recruit their students to attend Summit Christian. He left Summit Christian because the school could no longer afford to give his recruited players scholarships. He is notorious for showing up to summer league games to watch other school's players. He is a pariah amongst PBC basketball coaches. You used a big word when you said these stories are fabricated. Sadly, these stories are true

    Use big words said:

    9 months, 1 week ago

OH, so now I can use big words....just because I don't all the time, does not mean I cannot.
So your comments are not racist, when a person is white...it only applies when one is black. You heard he is white? You write as if you know him quite well and especially what color he is. Don't try to down play your initial use of the derogatory term you so callously threw at Coach Smith. It was a racially motivated comment and you know it.
    Let's get your stories straight:
    1. He was fired from Newman for recruiting.
Wrong, he got fired because he crossed the wrong parent who had a lot of power and influence. Coach Budnick never really did love Smith, and they did a very un-Christian firing of him by mail, after school was out. They never had the decency to bring him and talk to him. They took the cowards way out, with not even having real reasons to fire him.
2.Booted from Palm Beach Lakes for recruiting to SCS
What kid transferred from PBL high school to Summit Christian? Name the kid. Are you going to try to say Farad or Brandon? Correct me if I am wrong, but both of them came as freshman to SCS.
    3. Left Summit because of lack of scholarships
OK , if that were true...why does Summit have 5 new lineman coming this year, all of whom are most likely getting some kind of financial aid? So you know why he left Summit? You know how much he agonized over the decision to leave the kids and the school he has been so proud to be at, and the people who treated him like gold. It came to a simple life choice/new career path.

You are obviously a coach who has lost to Murray, because I don't know any casual observer who would claim to know so much about him. It must be exhausting to focus so much hate against one person. I hope you are able sleep ok at night, because after what I have read, you sound like you need xanax to keep yourself calm when you think about Coach Smith.

To Bill Powell and the person who thinks carpetbaggers is a racist term. Notice the last comment. It's obviously written by a kid. The kid is at Palm Beach Lakes. He has no motive to tell lies. I disagree with the kid about recruiting, but once again Coach Smith is associated with recruiting. If you are to be believed there is a well coordinated conspiracy throughout PBC to darken Coach Smith's name. It's much easier to believe that all of these different people, who have a remarkably similar story, are telling the truth. The fact is Coach Smith recruits. This summer he has had meetings with students from other schools in clear violation of FHSAA Rule 36.3. If indeed you are close personal friends of Mr. Smith you should inform him that people are watching. If he is the wonderful coach the two of you believe he is, he can take the ample talent in the Lake Worth area and have a great season. Maybe it's time Coach Smith tried to win the old fashioned way...with students that are supposed to go to his school.

You obviously have not seen what he does or doesn't do with his players and definately have never had a player at the school or you would know that If players want to work hard and get better then they will need to do so on their own. His few workouts or gym playtime are not intense enough. These players work hard but its on their own time and its not because of Dawson.

Ross at Dwyer has shown what can be done with talent. I think you got to look at something other than records - states stuff. That's all based on talent. Look at coaches who just get regular kids from their neighborhoods, don't go recruiting. Coach long is one of those guys. Coach Hands is one of those coaches. Coach Flagg at Atlantic. Best coaches are them who do good with who they got, not who they try to get or got for them.
